Homework #1

In Monday's lecture (1/7), I used four example organizations -- IBM,
UCI, the Apache Foundation (who coordinate the confederation of open
source programmers working on the Apache web server), and the Mafia.

In today's lecture (1/10), I presented three metaphors for
organizations -- machines, organisms and cultures -- and discussed
what they show us about UCI and what aspects of UCI they draw our
attention to.

What I'd like you to do is to pick one of the three remaining example
organizations (IBM, Apache, Mafia) and do the same exercise,
describing it according to each of the three metaphors. Then pick
another organization (not one of the three, but some other example
that you're familiar with) and do the same again.

Each description (two organizations and three metaphors, six in all)
should be a paragraph or so, so the whole thing should be around 1-2
pages (printed, please, unless your handwriting is a whole lot clearer
than mine).
